This week I started number 20 on my list, reading 3 books off of Matt’s bookshelf that I haven’t read yet. I started with Hatchet by Gary Paulsen for a few reasons. Mainly, I feel like I should have read this book a long time ago since I’ve known about it since probably middle school. But somehow I kept missing it.
Hatchet is the story of Brian, a 13 year old boy who is in a plane crash and must survive alone in the wilderness. It’s an interesting story and seeing his thought processes as he re-learns or learns the simplest things is fascinating, particularly from a young readers standpoint.
Maybe I’ve been spoiled with Rowling and Collins and such, but I found the writing in Hatchet to be a little awkward. To be fair, it suited the character and the plot, but it took me a bit to get into the writing style. At times it distracted me from the action; and, in a book with little to no dialogue, action is key.
Ultimately, though, I liked this book. I’m not sure that I would read it multiple times, but I’m glad that I finally read Hatchet.
Have you read this book? What did you think of it?
